The Miraculous Draught of Fishes by Konrad Witz
Year: 1443-1444
Medium: Tempra on walnut
Description: Witz was a Swiss painter. His only signed and dated work is the Saint Peter Altarpiece of which only four panels (the wings) survived. One of them, The Miraculous Draught of Fishes, presents a true Swiss landscape with view of the City of Basel (where the Church's Council of Bishops was), on the banks of Lake Geneva. Jesus is walking on the water, affirms his papacy. Witz wanted us to admire the glacial lake and landscape (Mount Blanc is in the background).
