Flemish refers to the culture and dialect of the people of Flanders, which is the Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium but absolutely can encompass parts of France and even the Netherlands as well. Flemish art has a rich history as being very influential and even revolutionary for its time; Flemish painters flourished from about the late 14th century all the way to the 17th century. Flemish painters developed new ways to use color and space and made Flemish art famous by using iconography and symbolism, mostly religious in nature but also allegory as well.
